Hello,

my name is Gretchen Peterson.

I have many roles and interests. I’m a mom, wife, Lutheran clergy-person, and volunteer. I love to be outside, no matter the season, and enjoy camping, running, and walking. I can tell you the name of any bird you hear or see. I love to knit and read.

I was on the school community council at Ecole Victoria for 8 years. I learned how to organise and lead meetings – both in person and online during Covid. I appreciated the diversity of voices at the table, and I valued each person who came to the meetings offering something to the group. I really enjoyed being involved with the school community, even when we were learning about, and navigating through, difficult times or topics.

My passion for public education and advocating for public education has continued to grow over these years of being involved. And it’s led me to this: being a candidate for school board trustee for Ward 6. I hope you will consider voting for me!

Work life

I have worked with youth in some capacity since being ordained a Lutheran deacon over 15 years ago. I see my role as advocating for young people to take up space in all arenas.

Young people have much to offer the world. In my job, I try to amplify their voices, and make it safe and comfortable for them to be at the table, sharing their views and making change.

I work for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, a church that is actively striving to be inclusive and progressive. We aren’t perfect but we are trying. I bring that gentle yet respectful approach to all my relationships and all my work.

Why vote for me?

I have been involved for the past 8 years on school community council, working through some of the hurdles and complexities we face in the public school system in Saskatchewan, together with other parents, students, teachers, and administrators.

This experience has prepared me to be an effective trustee.

What will I advocate for?

I will advocate for safer classrooms for our students and teachers, by having more resources to help with complexities experienced in the classrooms.

I will advocate for more provincial funding to help address the current needs of Saskatoon public education.

I will advocate for great public education for our students, for our teachers and for parents/caregivers.

Each student is worth having a wonderful public education – and I will advocate for that!

Why am I running?

I’m running for school board trustee for Ward 6 because I enjoyed all my years on Ecole Victoria’s school community council. This experience with students, parents, and educators, gave me a window into the challenges our public education is facing. Now, I feel I have the energy and skills to advocate for better solutions that help our students and our teachers.

I want our schools to be safe places for our students to thrive. I want our schools to be safe places for our educators to passionately engage our students in learning and extracurricular activities.
